The Art of Growing and Showing Chrysanthemums.
The Queen of Autumn Flowers.
We have all acknowledged by common consent that the Chrysanthemum is the Queen of all Autumn Flowers. This position has never been seriously challenged, a few more inferior flowering plants have tried to gain the position but have fallen short.
There are very many Chrysanthemum types to choose from on the market nowadays, many of the very old Chrysanthemum varieties have been lost and newer hybrids have come through. The Chrysanthemum hybrids raised over the last thirty years have now become well established in most of the Chrysanthemum Nursery catalogues.
The florist’s trade all over the world cannot get enough of this wonderful flower taking out contracts with local Chrysanthemum Nurseries in there area to mainly grow what is called the florist’s Chrysanthemum, these flowers are very long lasting when cut and will look at their best presented in a tall Chrysanthemum vase, the best Chrysanthemum cut flower vase we have seen to date was a pale blue oriental Chrysanthemum vase with six deep red Chrysanthemum flowers and six bronze Chrysanthemum flowers. The preparation and care of the cut flower Chrysanthemum should be at it’s greatest when removing the blooms from their box’s or containers upon delivery, the bottom four inches should have all leaves removed and the stems crushed this will allow a free flow of water to enter the plants system. The removing of the Chrysanthemum leaves will stop the water from turning and giving off methane gas. This gas will filter to the blooms above and spoil the Chrysanthemum perfume. It is always advisable to have all the same colours in your Chrysanthemum vase because the Chrysanthemum arrangements stand out better and customers can pick one from each vase.
With Chrysanthemum care it is always advised to spray all the foliage once every 14 days with fungicide to kill the spores of Chrysanthemum White Rust, this fungal disease is a major problem to all Chrysanthemum growing it is always at it’s worst in the later part of the year when there is more damp weather about, if you can keep your Chrysanthemum plants well spaced this will help stop the spread of the White Rust spores.
We have entered into many outdoor Chrysanthemum trials to see which varieties and colours of Chrysanthemum are best or strongest to shrug off White Rust and we have found over the last 20 years that the Golden Chrysanthemum flower is very resistant, also the spray types such as Spiders and Spoons these varieties have a smaller leaf size so attract fewer White Rust Spores.
The Green Chrysanthemum called Green Goddess is very resistant to Rust it probably helps being a late flowering type spending half it’s life in a greenhouse or poly-tunnel away from the worst weather. The growing of this Chrysanthemum is very long being well over 8 months.
The growing of the perfect Chrysanthemum hinges on one or two issues:-
*Acquiring clean Chrysanthemum cuttings from a top Chrysanthemum grower, the cutting will have gone through a vigorous health check and will have had what is called hot water treatment to kill eelworm and to a certain degree White Rust Spores.
*It is possible to buy Chrysanthemum Plants from Garden Centres already in a jiffy pot or p9 these plants are fine if you are not concerned about their name or colour, they are very rarely labelled. The non-labelling hides the fact that they are seed raised. Seed raised Chrysanthemum plants are a cheap way to put many millions of plants on the market without the expense of clean stock plants, these plants will not come true to the parent stock.
The National Chrysanthemum Societies worldwide have many lists of named growers and how to get cuttings for Chrysanthemum from very good suppliers. Many of the suppliers will list the names and have many different types of Chrysanthemums to choose from, many of the Chrysanthemum nurseries have a large photo gallery with many Chrysanthemum pictures to view, all the chrysanthemum facts you need to know about growing wonderful florist Quality Chrysanthemum flowers.
These lists will include early flowering blooms, late flowering blooms, early flowering sprays, late flowering sprays. The varieties of Chrysanthemum Pom Poms that are fast becoming the highest selling Chrysanthemum because of their weather resistance in damp climates.
Most Chrysanthemum Nurseries are now stocking the hardy Chrysanthemum Shasta Daisy and the very hardy Crazy Daisy, also the new Patio Pot Mums in many eye-catching colours.
More and more Chrysanthemum Varieties are being introduced have their parentage from tissue cultured hybrids, most of the plantlets are resistant to White Rust and many sucking insects. Many of the best colours are chosen for radiation treatment which will scramble the cells so what went in as a White coloured Chrysanthemum when grown will sport many different colours.
